Step 3: Panel Type โ€” IPS, VA, OLED, or TN?

The panel type affects everything: colors, viewing angles, response time, and price. Here's the honest breakdown:

  • IPS (In-Plane Switching): Best color accuracy and viewing angles. Colors stay consistent even when you view the screen from the side. Slightly worse contrast than VA, but modern IPS Black technology has dramatically improved this. The best choice for creative professionals and anyone who values image quality. Test your IPS panel for uniformity issues that some cheaper IPS monitors suffer from.
  • VA (Vertical Alignment): Best contrast ratio โ€” deep blacks that make movies and dark games look stunning. However, VA panels suffer from the worst ghosting and motion blur, especially in dark scenes. If you play fast-paced games, test your VA monitor for ghosting before committing.
  • OLED: Perfect blacks, infinite contrast, instant response times, and stunning colors. OLED is objectively the best display technology available today. The downside? Potential for burn-in with static elements like taskbars and logos. OLED monitors are also significantly more expensive but worth every penny if budget allows.
  • TN (Twisted Nematic): The fastest response times at the expense of terrible colors and viewing angles. Once popular for competitive gaming, TN is now obsolete โ€” IPS and OLED have caught up in speed while being vastly superior in image quality. Avoid TN unless you find one extremely cheap.
